FA Cup to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology

Đăng trên Tháng hai 14, 2025, updated on Tháng hai 14, 2025

In a significant development for English football, the FA Cup will implement semi-automated offside technology for the first time during the fifth round matches. This technology, which has not yet been used in competitive English football, aims to streamline the decision-making process surrounding offside calls, thereby reducing the reliance on subjective human judgment. The announcement was made by the Football Association (FA), confirming the technology's rollout across all seven matches hosted at Premier League stadiums.

The semi-automated system seeks to enhance accuracy and efficiency by utilizing artificial intelligence to monitor ball and player movements. It will automatically determine key factors such as the timing of the ball being played and the positioning of players at that moment. This innovation is expected to not only speed up decisions but also improve the overall experience for fans, with virtual graphics enhancing in-stadium and broadcast presentations. The FA has indicated that following successful operations in the FA Cup, there are plans to introduce the system to the Premier League later in the season.

VAR will also be in operation for all eight FA Cup fifth-round ties, including matches at lower-division venues. This move comes after a unanimous agreement among Premier League clubs to adopt this technology for the 2024-25 season, although its introduction was initially delayed for additional testing. With the fifth round scheduled for the weekend of March 1, the integration of semi-automated offsides represents a significant step forward in the evolution of officiating in English football, aligning it with advancements already seen in leagues like the UEFA Champions League.
