La Liga Files EU Complaint Against Manchester City Over Competition Law Breaches

Đăng trên Tháng hai 28, 2025, updated on Tháng hai 28, 2025

La Liga, the Spanish football league, has lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission, accusing Manchester City of violating EU Competition Law. The complaint, filed in 2023, pertains to the Foreign Subsidies Regulation, which addresses financial support from non-EU states to companies operating within the EU market. La Liga president Javier Tebas has claimed that City has benefitted from subsidies from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which he argues has distorted competition both in Spain and across Europe.

Tebas stated that the financial backing enables Manchester City to secure high-profile players and coaches, significantly enhancing their competitive edge while undermining other clubs. He emphasized the need for transparency and governance in football finances, asserting that all clubs should adhere to the same rules to ensure fair competition. La Liga's statement suggests that the subsidies allow City to operate under conditions that are far from normal market standards, thus restricting the capabilities of rival clubs.

In response, Manchester City has categorically denied the allegations, labeling them as unfounded. The club pointed to its financial records as evidence of compliance with regulations. The current complaint from La Liga is distinct from the 115 charges City faces regarding alleged violations of Premier League financial regulations, which the club has also denied. As the case unfolds, La Liga is awaiting further developments from the European Commission regarding their complaint.
