Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez Dropped for Two Games After Crossing 'Line' with Comments

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has revealed that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will be dropped for the club's next two games after he "crossed a line" with comments about his future. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in a British record £107m transfer in January 2023, recently told ESPN that he was unsure if he would remain at Stamford Bridge next season.

Rosenior stated that Fernandez's comments were "disappointing" and that they went against the club's culture and vision. "A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build," said Rosenior. The manager emphasized that the decision to drop Fernandez was not solely his own, but one made in alignment with the club's ownership and players.

Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, has criticized the decision, calling it "completely unfair" and arguing that the Argentina international did not mention wanting to leave Chelsea. Pastore believes the punishment is too harsh, especially with Chelsea's crucial Champions League qualification still at stake.

Rosenior, however, has stood by the decision, stating that the "door is not closed on Enzo." The manager acknowledged that the comments stemmed from a difficult 10-day period for the club, which included a heavy aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Rosenior also addressed comments made by defender Marc Cucurella, who suggested his future could lie elsewhere, though the Spaniard has since clarified his commitment to Chelsea. The manager stressed the need for more "emotional stability" within the squad during challenging times.

This incident highlights the delicate balance that managers must strike when dealing with player discontent and protecting the club's culture. Rosenior's decision to sanction Fernandez, while maintaining an open dialogue, demonstrates his determination to uphold the values he and the club's leadership are trying to instill.
