Liverpool's Champions League Dreams Shattered as Arne Slot's Isak Gamble Backfires

Liverpool's hopes of silverware this season have come to an end after a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarterfinals. Under manager Arne Slot, the Reds have gone from Premier League champions less than a year ago to a team struggling to secure a top-four finish.

Slot's decision to start Alexander Isak, who was only fit for one half, backfired as the striker made little impact before being substituted at the break. Liverpool looked a different side after Cody Gakpo's introduction, creating more chances and threatening the PSG defense.

Former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock was critical of Slot's team selection, calling it "complete nonsense" and saying Isak was "awful" and "non-existent" against the French champions. Slot defended his decision, but admitted Isak was only ready for 45 minutes.

With no silverware on the horizon, Slot has acknowledged that failing to qualify for the Champions League next season would be "unacceptable." The Dutchman faces a crucial run-in in the Premier League, where Liverpool currently sit outside the top four.

While there were positives to take from their performance at Anfield, the gulf in class between Liverpool and the European champions was evident. PSG outclassed Slot's side over the two legs, and the Reds' struggles this season have raised questions about the manager's future.

With Mohamed Salah's likely departure from Anfield looming, Slot must now navigate the remainder of the campaign and secure a top-four finish to ensure Liverpool's return to Europe's premier competition next season. The loss against PSG has ended the Reds' chances of silverware, leaving them with a fight on their hands to salvage something from a difficult campaign.
