Xavi Simons Injury Leaves Spurs Short for Survival Fight

Xavi Simons’ season is over, and so is his chance of playing at the World Cup. The Tottenham midfielder has suffered a ruptured ACL, leaving Spurs without one of their most important attackers at the worst possible moment.
The injury happened in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wolves, when Simons was hurt in a collision with Hugo Bueno and later had to be stretchered off. Spurs have confirmed he will have surgery in the coming weeks before beginning rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff.
Simons said he was “heartbroken” and described the setback as cruel and difficult to process. He also spoke about the pain of missing both the end of the club season and the chance to represent the Netherlands in the summer.
For Tottenham, the timing could hardly be worse. They are still in the relegation zone and only two points from safety with four matches left, so every absence matters. Simons joins an already long injury list that includes Dominic Solanke, Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Cristian Romero.
His influence has been clear whenever he has played. Tottenham look more direct and more dangerous with him in the side, and the numbers back that up: they win more often when he starts and score more goals, averaging 1.5 per game rather than one without him in the XI.
He was also one of Spurs’ most creative players in recent matches, including the draw with Brighton and the Wolves win. He led the team for chances created and shots, while also ranking highly for touches in the box, carries and completed passes.
That makes his absence especially damaging during a run-in that is full of pressure. Spurs still have to face Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leeds and Everton, with each match carrying major consequences for survival.
Simons joined from RB Leipzig for £52m last summer, but he has struggled to make a major impact in a turbulent season that has already seen three different managers. Now Tottenham must try to finish the campaign without him, and without much room for error.
