Why Mbappe Has Become the Lightning Rod for Real Madrid's Frustration

Đăng trên Tháng năm 08, 2026, updated on Tháng năm 08, 2026

Kylian Mbappe’s situation at Real Madrid has taken a dramatic turn, with a reported 30 million people signing a petition calling for his exit. While the number itself may be exaggerated, the message is clear: frustration among fans is growing rapidly.

The main issue is not just performance, but perception. Mbappe has scored heavily since joining, yet Real Madrid have failed to win major trophies during his time at the club. That contrast has made him an easy target, especially in a season that has fallen apart.

Recent events have only added fuel to the fire. Mbappe’s short trip to Sardinia while recovering from injury has been badly received by supporters, particularly with the team trailing Barcelona in La Liga and facing a decisive El Clásico. Even though he had permission and followed his rehab plan, the optics have worked against him.

There are also deeper football concerns. Many fans question whether Mbappe and Vinicius Jr can function effectively in the same team. Both prefer similar attacking roles, and the lack of balance has become a recurring criticism. At the same time, Mbappe’s limited defensive work has drawn comparisons with the approach at PSG, where Luis Enrique prioritised collective effort over individual status.

In fact, PSG’s success since Mbappe’s departure has only intensified the debate. The French club moved away from a superstar-focused model and are now back in the Champions League final, which some see as evidence that a more balanced system works better.

Looking ahead, the issue is likely to become one of the biggest decisions facing Real Madrid this summer. A new manager—potentially someone like Jose Mourinho—would have to decide how to build the team around its biggest star, or whether changes are needed to restore balance and control.

Despite the noise, a transfer remains unlikely. Mbappe still has three years left on his contract, and the financial realities of modern football make a move extremely complicated. Any deal would require a huge fee and wages that very few clubs could match.

For now, the focus shifts to the end of the season and the upcoming World Cup. Mbappe may see the international stage as a chance to reset his form and reputation, but at Real Madrid, the scrutiny is unlikely to ease anytime soon.
