Spurs Held by Leeds as Relegation Pressure Mounts

Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds, leaving them only two points above the relegation zone with two games left. Mathys Tel scored a brilliant opener but then gave away the penalty that allowed Leeds to equalise after a VAR review.
The draw also gives West Ham a major boost. If they beat Newcastle on Sunday, they will move above Spurs in the table, while Leeds have already secured their Premier League status after West Ham’s defeat to Arsenal.
Spurs had chances to win it, including a late opening for Sean Longstaff that was brilliantly denied by Antonin Kinsky. There was also a late appeal for a foul on James Maddison, but both the referee and VAR waved it away.
The penalty incident changed the mood of the match. Tel’s overhead clearance caught Ethan Ampadu, and after a lengthy review the spot-kick was awarded and converted.
Roberto De Zerbi said his side were under huge pressure and did not stay calm enough, but praised Tel’s attitude and mentality. He also suggested Leeds could make life harder for West Ham next, which underlines how tense the relegation fight has become.
Spurs’ season is now heading toward a nervous finish. Leeds, meanwhile, can go into next season safe after a result that reshaped the bottom of the table.
