Spurs Left Hanging on a Fine Margin as Relegation Fear Builds

Đăng trên Tháng năm 20, 2026, updated on Tháng năm 20, 2026

Tottenham Hotspur’s survival hopes now hinge on one final day, after a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea left them in danger of suffering a humiliating relegation from the Premier League. The result means Spurs can still save themselves at home to Everton on Sunday, when a point would be enough because of their superior goal difference over West Ham, but defeat combined with a Hammers win would send them down.

The most controversial moment of the night came near the end, when Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella dragged Micky van de Ven to the ground as Mathys Tel prepared to deliver a corner. Spurs immediately appealed for a penalty, only for the officials to rule that the foul had happened just before the ball came into play. That tiny timing difference meant no spot-kick could be awarded, and Cucurella was only shown a yellow card. Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge described it as a “one second difference” that denied Spurs a guaranteed penalty.

Spurs will no doubt feel aggrieved by that call, but the bigger problem was their own performance. Chelsea had already taken control through goals from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos, with Richarlison briefly giving Spurs hope. Yet the visitors were slow to respond and lacked urgency for much of the match, only finding any real intensity once the situation had become desperate. By then, the chance to settle matters had already gone.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi refused to dwell on the penalty incident, instead stressing that Sunday’s match against Everton is now the club’s true final. He said the game is more important than last season’s Europa League final victory, because it concerns the club’s pride, dignity and top-flight status. His message was clear: Spurs must focus entirely on getting the result they need.

The frustration spilled over after the final whistle, with James Maddison involved in the arguments, but the anger will likely be greater over what Spurs did not do earlier in the season. They had chances to avoid this position, including a home draw with Leeds United and a lacklustre display at Stamford Bridge. Their run of poor results has left them vulnerable on the final day, and this defeat was their 17th league loss of the campaign.

What makes the situation even bleaker is the wider backdrop. Arsenal were celebrating the Premier League title on the same night, while Spurs face the prospect of a first relegation since 1977. That contrast has turned the week into a nightmare scenario for north London’s other club. The final insult could still arrive on Sunday, unless Spurs finally show the composure and fight that have been missing for much of a disastrous season.
