Nuno Set to Lead West Ham's Promotion Push After Relegation

Nuno Espirito Santo will remain as West Ham manager to lead the club’s challenge for immediate promotion back to the Premier League. The decision comes after a meeting between the Portuguese and the club’s senior management, during which both sides agreed to stay together rather than cut ties without compensation.

West Ham have confirmed that Nuno is highly motivated to guide the club back to the top flight at the first attempt, with promotion treated as the unquestionable goal for next season. The club pointed to his previous success in the Championship, when he won the title with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018, securing 99 points and crafting a squad that rose straight back to the Premier League.

The club’s open letter to supporters acknowledged that this season was not good enough and that relegation was a painful outcome. West Ham are now facing an estimated £200m loss in revenue, on top of a loss of more than £100m in their latest accounts. That financial pressure will almost certainly force player sales, including the possibility of parting with high-value assets such as Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes.

Despite the blow, the board believes there have been clear signs of improvement since January. West Ham took 25 points from their final 17 Premier League matches, a rate of 1.47 points per game that would have translated into a seventh-place finish over a full season. The club feel the mentality and togetherness of the squad have improved during that period, and they see Nuno as the right person to continue that progress.

Nuno’s task will be far from straightforward. He will need to rebuild the squad within the Championship’s financial constraints, while also dealing with a fractured relationship between the club and its supporters. Many fans have never forgiven the move from Upton Park to the London Stadium in 2016, and they feel broken promises about competing at the top of the Premier League and in Europe have tarnished the club’s identity.

West Ham have pledged to repair that relationship by listening more closely to supporters and communicating more transparently. As a first step, season ticket prices for next season will be reduced by up to 30% across all categories. The board has also committed to reviewing every aspect of the club’s operations with the aim of returning to the Premier League in August 2027 as a better club on and off the pitch.

Nuno’s promotion drive at Wolves was built around a strong home-grown core and a mix of smart signings and loan deals. He will not have the same resources this time, but the club believes his track record, combined with the squad’s recent improvement, gives them a realistic chance of going straight back up.

This decision represents a gamble on continuity rather than a fresh start. West Ham are betting that Nuno can turn a difficult relegation into a platform for immediate return, and that his leadership will be key to reuniting the team, the fans and the club’s identity around a single goal: promotion.
