England's thrilling World Cup win shows Tuchel's bold new approach

England’s 4-2 win over Croatia was a lively, entertaining start to their World Cup campaign and a sign that Thomas Tuchel is willing to take risks. It was not perfect, especially at the back, but it was certainly far more exciting than the cautious England sides fans have grown used to in recent years.
The game swung back and forth in Dallas, with Harry Kane striking twice and Jude Bellingham scoring a crucial goal just after half-time. Croatia kept finding gaps in England’s defence, and that will concern Tuchel, but England’s attacking intent and energy gave supporters something they have often missed: a team that looked fun to watch.
Tuchel’s approach was clear from the beginning. He has spoken openly about wanting England to play with freedom, and his substitutions backed that up. Bringing on Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers was a bold move designed to increase pressure rather than protect a lead. It worked, with England finishing the game strongly and Rashford adding the late goal that settled it.
Bellingham was a standout, using his power and running to drive England forward. Kane, meanwhile, continued to show why he is so central to the team, equalising a World Cup scoring record and then converting a penalty after a retake. Noni Madueke also impressed, adding pace and directness from the right.
There are still obvious problems to solve. England looked shaky defensively, especially in the first half, and Tuchel will know better opposition could punish similar mistakes. The choice to start Ezri Konsa ahead of Marc Guehi did not fully convince, and the back line will likely be under pressure for selection changes before the next match.
Still, the mood around England has changed quickly. For too long, the team has been seen as efficient but dull, even during deep tournament runs. This felt different. Tuchel’s willingness to attack, his refusal to play it safe, and the response from his substitutes all suggest England may be heading into a more aggressive, more adventurous phase.
The result matters too. Winning the opening game gives England a strong base in Group L, and Tuchel has now set the tone for what he wants this team to become. If they can tighten up at the back without losing their attacking edge, they could become one of the most dangerous sides in the tournament.
