Lamine Yamal gives Spain a glimpse of a World Cup-defining superstar

Lamine Yamal was the headline before kick-off and the main talking point long after the final whistle as Spain beat Saudi Arabia 4-0. The 18-year-old delivered the kind of performance that suggests this tournament could become his coming-of-age moment on the global stage.
After playing only 19 minutes in Spain’s earlier draw with Cape Verde, Yamal returned to the starting line-up looking sharp, fearless and full of belief. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente had treated his earlier appearance as part of a longer recovery plan after the hamstring injury he suffered in April, and the careful management paid off here.
From the moment he stepped onto the pitch, Yamal changed the mood inside the stadium. Fans wore his name, cheered every time he appeared on the big screen, and roared whenever he touched the ball. He did not just arrive as a player with a reputation; he arrived as the centre of the occasion.
Spain also looked far more purposeful than they did in their previous outing. They played with pace, conviction and aggression, and Yamal was at the heart of everything positive. He drifted past defenders with ease, created space for others, and gave Spain’s attack a sense of inevitability.
His reward came with his first World Cup goal. He arrived at the back post to slide in a low cross and open the scoring, sparking wild celebrations in the stands. It was a fitting moment for a player already being described as a generational talent.
The numbers add to the sense of history. Yamal became the seventh player ever to score at a World Cup before turning 19, and only the second aged 18 or younger to open the scoring in a match. The other was Pelé for Brazil in 1958. That kind of company tells its own story.
Pundits were quick to praise him. César Azpilicueta said Yamal has the confidence and freedom to produce things that cannot be taught, while Guillem Balagué described him as a player who seems to carry himself like he has already conquered the world. Wayne Rooney also drew comparisons with Lionel Messi, noting how rare it is for such a young player to become the main reference point for both club and country.
Mikel Oyarzabal added two quick goals to complete Spain’s early dominance, but the spotlight remained on Yamal. His work was finished by half-time, with Spain taking a precautionary approach and withdrawing him while protecting his fitness for the rest of the tournament.
Spain will keep managing him carefully, but if Yamal stays fit, he could be the player who decides how far they go.
