Mbappé shines as France confirm knockout supremacy

Kylian Mbappé broke the World Cup knockout scoring record as France beat Sweden 3-0 to book a last-16 meeting with Paraguay. The Real Madrid forward scored twice, moved within one goal of Lionel Messi’s overall tournament mark, and once again looked like the player most likely to decide this World Cup.

France’s victory was their biggest in a World Cup knockout match since the 1998 final against Brazil, and it was a performance that underlined why they are being spoken of as the tournament favourites. Sweden had no answer to France’s pace, movement and technical quality, especially in the front line where Mbappé, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola repeatedly caused problems.

Mbappé opened the scoring with a superb individual goal just before half-time. After collecting the ball near the byline, he used a sharp crossover step to get away from Viktor Gyökeres and then finished neatly inside the far post. The goal gave him nine World Cup knockout goals, moving him clear of Brazilian greats Ronaldo and Leonidas.

He was not finished there. Barcola doubled France’s lead early in the second half after Gustaf Lagerbielke lost possession, allowing Olise to feed the move. Olise then played a key role again for France’s third, linking with Mbappé, who sprinted into the box and finished coolly into the far corner for his second of the night.

That second goal took Mbappé to six in this tournament, putting him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. It also lifted him to 18 World Cup goals overall, just one behind Messi’s total. The comparison is striking, especially because Mbappé has reached that mark in only 18 World Cup appearances.

France were dominant from the start and outshot Sweden 25-7. They hit the woodwork twice in a strong opening half, with Mbappé denied by the post and Olise nearly scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick. The temperature, humidity and poor air quality in East Rutherford made conditions difficult, but France looked much more comfortable than their opponents throughout.

There was also a moving moment for Didier Deschamps, who returned to the touchline after missing the previous match to attend his mother’s funeral. Mbappé ran straight to him after scoring, and the France captain later said the team would support their coach through a difficult time. Deschamps responded by saying the squad are “on a mission.”

Olise was another major figure in the win, providing the assist for Barcola’s goal and finishing with five tournament assists, the most by any player at a men’s World Cup since Thomas Hässler in 1994. Barcola praised him as a “genius,” reflecting the growing confidence and chemistry in France’s attack.

France now head into the last 16 with momentum, depth and belief. If Mbappé continues at this level, and if Olise and the rest of the attacking unit keep producing, they will be extremely hard to stop.
