Koeman resigns as Netherlands manager after World Cup exit and racist abuse reports

Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands manager after their World Cup exit, while the Dutch federation said players who missed penalties were targeted by racist abuse online. Koeman also suggested that personal circumstances, including his wife’s illness, played a major role in his decision to step away.

The Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all missing in the shootout. The KNVB said it would pursue criminal complaints against abusive social media messages and condemned the discrimination as the opposite of what football stands for.

Koeman’s departure ends his second spell in charge. His first stint had been viewed positively, but this campaign was much harder, with criticism that he was too defensive and had not fully convinced with the team’s style or results.

The broader context matters too. The abuse after missed penalties echoes the racist attacks suffered by England’s Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho after the Euro 2021 final, which later led to criminal convictions.
