Kane rescues England with biggest World Cup moment yet

Harry Kane delivered the kind of performance that defines a career, scoring twice to rescue England from a damaging World Cup defeat against DR Congo. For long stretches England looked headed for a humiliating exit, but their captain dragged them back and turned a likely disaster into a 2-1 win.

The match had been heading in the wrong direction for England until Kane intervened late on. His first goal came with 15 minutes left, when he powered a header past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, and his second was even better: a precise right-foot finish into the top corner after a clever setup from substitute Anthony Gordon.

That second goal was the moment that decided the game. It sent England through to the last 16 and, just as importantly, likely saved Thomas Tuchel from a damaging defeat in his first major tournament in charge. Relief was the overriding emotion for both the coach and the Football Association.

Kane’s influence went beyond the goals. He now has five in the tournament, 13 World Cup goals overall and 84 for England, moving him alongside Ferenc Puskas in the all-time international scoring charts. He is also the first England player since Gary Lineker in 1990 to score twice in a World Cup knockout match.

What makes the performance stand out is how complete Kane has become. He is still elite in front of goal, but he also contributes as a passer, leader and organiser. At 32, he is producing one of the best seasons of his career, with 72 goals in 62 games for club and country.

Tuchel described the race for the Golden Boot as a battle between “sharks,” with Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi all chasing glory. But he was clear that Kane’s influence is central to England’s chances. Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon were equally effusive, praising his consistency, professionalism and example in training and matches.

England now face a daunting test against Mexico in the Azteca Stadium, one of the most intimidating venues in world football. The altitude, the atmosphere and Mexico’s strong record at home all make the task difficult. But if England need a moment of class, they know exactly who to turn to.

That is what makes Kane so valuable. On nights when England are close to collapse, he remains the player who can change everything.
