Switzerland end 88-year knockout wait with composed win over Algeria

Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to reach the World Cup last 16 and end an 88-year wait for a knockout-stage win. Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored as the Swiss controlled the game from start to finish.

Algeria briefly threatened early on when Ramiz Zerrouki had a penalty appeal waved away, but Switzerland quickly took control. Johan Manzambi drove down the left and set up Embolo for a simple finish after 10 minutes, giving the Swiss an early lead and settling the match.

The second half brought more of the same. Algeria struggled to create chances, while Switzerland doubled their advantage when Embolo’s cross was not dealt with and Ndoye fired in from the edge of the box. It was a decisive moment that left Algeria with too much to do and too little quality to change the game.

There was still time for Switzerland to push for more. Fabian Rieder somehow shot straight at Luca Zidane from close range, and the Algeria goalkeeper later denied Remo Freuler with a low stop in stoppage time. But the result was never really in doubt once Ndoye made it 2-0.

The win is significant for Switzerland on a historical level as well as a competitive one. Their last World Cup knockout victory had come in 1938, so this was a breakthrough moment for a team that has often reached the latter stages without going much further.

They now move on to face either Colombia or Ghana in the last 16, with a chance to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in the modern era. For Algeria, it was a flat end to a campaign that never really found its rhythm.
