Chelsea add Quenda to summer rebuild

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda in a £40m deal, continuing their busy summer reshaping under new manager Xabi Alonso. The 19-year-old has signed an eight-year contract and becomes the club’s second announced arrival of the window, after Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra joined for £42m.

Quenda’s move has actually been agreed for some time, dating back to March 2025 during Enzo Maresca’s spell in charge, but the formal announcement now makes it official. He is expected to go straight into the first-team squad and offers Alonso plenty of flexibility because he can operate as a winger, attacking midfielder or wing-back.

The Portuguese under-21 international said he was excited to join Chelsea and praised the club’s faith in young players. He added that he is eager to work with Alonso, help his team-mates and contribute to winning trophies. Chelsea are clearly banking on his energy, versatility and mentality as part of their long-term plan.

Quenda arrives having already built valuable experience in Portugal. He made 86 appearances for Sporting, including 16 in the Champions League, after breaking into the senior side under Ruben Amorim. That background should help him settle quickly into a demanding environment at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s transfer activity this summer has been relentless. They have also explored moves for Pep Chavarria, Maxence Lacroix and Granit Xhaka, while sources in France and Argentina say Valentin Barco is set to join from sister club Strasbourg. At the same time, several players are moving out: Marc Cucurella has gone to Real Madrid, Tyrique George has joined Everton and Andrey Santos is expected to complete a move to Manchester United.

The club are also managing the balance between spending and squad planning. Chelsea recently confirmed Jesse Derry’s new six-year contract, with the teenager set to go on loan to Sporting. It is a reminder that the club are trying to build both for now and for later, mixing immediate first-team additions with long-term development.

For Chelsea, Quenda is another sign that the rebuild is moving fast. He is young, technically gifted and adaptable, and the club believe he can grow into an important part of Alonso’s team.
