Villa in talks for Garnacho as Chelsea want permanent sale

Aston Villa have opened talks to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, with the clubs discussing a loan deal that Chelsea would prefer to include a permanent element. Chelsea are prepared to sell the winger for about £42.7m, but they do not want a pure loan if he leaves Stamford Bridge.

Garnacho has not returned for pre-season training while his future is sorted out, and Chelsea have already made clear he is available after a disappointing first season at the club. Roma are also interested, while Saudi Pro League sides are monitoring the situation too.

For Villa, the appeal is straightforward: Unai Emery wants more width and another winger after the sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117m. Garnacho’s best work has usually come from staying wide and attacking full-backs, so Villa would likely need to tweak their left-sided patterns to get the best out of him.

That fit is not perfect, though. Garnacho’s minutes and end product at Chelsea were limited last season, and his tendency to hug the touchline means he is less naturally flexible than Rogers or Emiliano Buendía, who can move inside and swap flanks more easily.

Chelsea’s stance is also practical, not just tactical. They are trying to balance a squad overhaul and financial rules after spending heavily, so selling Garnacho permanently would help fund other moves and keep their books in order.

So the deal makes sense for both clubs if the structure can be agreed: Villa want a winger, Chelsea want a sale, and Garnacho wants clarity. The main question now is whether Villa accept Chelsea’s demand for a permanent component rather than a simple loan.
