Alonso's Chelsea project starts to take shape in Sydney

Đăng trên Tháng tám 03, 2026, updated on Tháng tám 03, 2026

Xabi Alonso is already putting his stamp on Chelsea, and the early signs point to a manager trying to heal old scars from Real Madrid by building something more stable in west London. In Sydney, he has been hands-on in training, communicating clearly with players and looking every inch a head coach who wants control over both the football and the culture.

The Spanish manager has spoken openly about learning from his Real Madrid disappointment and treating it as a healed scar rather than a lingering wound. After stepping away for four months to reset, he says Chelsea felt like the right timing and the right challenge, and that he had carefully assessed the club’s positives and concerns before taking the job.

Building a senior core

What stands out most is Alonso’s determination to add leadership to a very young squad. The arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson are designed to bring experience, standards and dressing-room authority, while players such as Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra give him the quality to implement his ideas on the pitch.

That blend matters because Chelsea have often lacked the right balance of personalities and maturity. Alonso has made it clear he wants players in their early 20s and early 30s, plus the right collective culture around them, and he has already been involved in small details like staff games and team-building activities on tour.

Tactical fingerprints

On the pitch, his fingerprints are easy to spot. He has been running full sessions, using precise short passing and trademark cross-field switches, and even physically challenging players like Nicolas Jackson and Moisés Caicedo in drills to show the intensity he expects. That style reflects the disciplined, controlling football he played at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Levi Colwill’s comment that he feels “jealous” watching Alonso train says a lot about the reaction inside the squad. Players appear to be buying into a manager whose authority comes from having done it at the highest level himself, and whose methods are already more immersive than Chelsea’s previous setups.

Why Chelsea feels right

Alonso has explained that he chose Chelsea after private meetings in London and San Sebastián because the club’s leaders shared his analysis and his vision. He was not rushed into the role, and the fact there was no Liverpool offer at the time meant Stamford Bridge became the right step in the right moment rather than a compromise.

That matters because Chelsea need a reset as much as Alonso does. Last season’s 10th-place finish and trophyless campaign showed the scale of the rebuild, but Alonso believes there is big potential in the squad and that progress can come quickly if the project is handled properly.

What comes next

The tour in Australia is only the beginning, but it already feels like a new Chelsea. With more signings possible, senior figures arriving, and Alonso deeply involved in the details, the club are trying to create the kind of structure that can sustain success rather than just chase it.

That, more than any individual transfer, is the revolution Alonso is trying to lead. He is not only coaching Chelsea’s team; he is trying to coach Chelsea’s identity.
