Can Carrick bring Rashford back into United's plans?

Đăng trên Tháng tám 04, 2026, updated on Tháng tám 04, 2026

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United is unresolved, and Michael Carrick now faces a major decision: reintegrate him or move him on before the window closes. Barcelona did not take up the £26m option to buy after his loan spell, so Rashford is due back at Carrington with no clear route forward and no squad number, which makes a return feel awkward but not impossible.

The Rashford dilemma

Rashford is still under contract until 2028 and remains one of United’s biggest names, but his loan at Barcelona effectively created the sense that he had already closed a chapter at Old Trafford. He did not seem fully committed to a return before, and with Matheus Cunha now wearing his old No 10 shirt, the symbolism around his comeback is as difficult as the football decision itself.

United also do not appear keen on another loan to Barcelona, so if Rashford leaves, it would likely need to be a permanent sale negotiated from scratch. That gives United more leverage, but it also means they must decide quickly whether Carrick can actually use him or whether they should cash in while his market still exists.

What Carrick may do

At the moment, United’s stance is basically “wait and see.” Carrick has not ruled out a return, and the question is whether Rashford can be used as a genuine part of the attack or whether the dressing-room and squad-dynamics issues outweigh the talent.

There is no denying Rashford’s status: even after a year away from Old Trafford, he is still a star name and one of United’s most recognisable players. But the longer the uncertainty drags on, the harder it becomes to imagine a clean reintegration.

United’s wider rebuild

The club are not just dealing with Rashford. They have already strengthened midfield by bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and the early-season shape suggests Mason Mount and Santos could be the first-choice pairing, with Kobbie Mainoo and Tielemans pushing for places as the season goes on.

United are also still looking at left-back, with Lewis Hall now seen as a more achievable target than many first thought. That matters because it shows the club are actively reshaping multiple areas, so Rashford’s fate is only one part of a broader squad reset.

What looks most likely

If Rashford stays, Carrick would need to find a role that makes sense tactically and socially. If he goes, United will want a permanent deal and not another temporary stopgap. Right now, the most realistic outcome is still a sale if a suitable bidder emerges, because everything about the loan return suggests both sides may be ready for a separation rather than a reunion.
