Liverpool complete loan deal for Ronald Araujo with option to buy

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy for around £47m (€55m). The 27-year-old Uruguay international will wear the No 33 shirt and is expected to join training this week after completing his medical, with Liverpool covering his full wages for the loan period.

Araujo said he was “super-happy” to join a “massive club with lots of history” and described the move as “necessary” at this stage of his career. He added that everything moved quickly once Liverpool’s interest became clear, and that he is motivated to get started and prove himself in the Premier League.

The deal addresses an immediate defensive crisis for Andoni Iraola. With Ibrahima Konate gone to Real Madrid, Joe Gomez injured, Jeremy Jacquet not yet match-fit after shoulder surgery and Giovanni Leoni still recovering from an ACL tear, Virgil van Dijk had been Liverpool’s only fully-fit senior centre-back. Araujo, who can play both centre-back and right-back, adds experience and depth to a very thin backline.

For Barcelona, the move makes sense as Araujo was not in Hansi Flick’s plans. Flick has said Araujo is a “great guy” but his style does not suit how he wants to play, and the defender had only started 11 LaLiga matches last season after a long break linked to injury and mental health issues. Barcelona can now reshape their defence while retaining a significant option fee if Araujo excels in England.

Liverpool are taking a calculated risk: Araujo’s form and fitness have been inconsistent, but at his peak he was valued at roughly double the option fee. If he rediscovers his best level in a league that suits his physicality, the Reds have a strong case to make the deal permanent; if not, they walk away after a year of cover.
