Arsenal's 3-0 win is a statement — but not a season verdict

Arsenal were emphatic in Cardiff, beating Manchester City 3-0 through Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard to lift the Community Shield. The performance was genuinely dominant: Arsenal created 2.19 expected goals to City’s 0.77, produced four big chances to City’s one, and all of their attacking threat came from open play rather than set pieces.

But one match, particularly the Community Shield, does not prove Arsenal are untouchable or that City cannot challenge. It does show the scale of the task facing Enzo Maresca at the start of the post-Guardiola era.

Why Arsenal looked so far ahead

Arsenal had continuity, confidence and depth. Arteta’s core group knows the system, has just won the Premier League, and was able to bring Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Viktor Gyokeres off the bench. New arrivals Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis fitted in immediately, with Tzolis supplying two assists and Guimaraes providing control at the base of midfield.

The opening 23-second goal set the tone, but the key point was that Arsenal did not simply defend their advantage. They pressed City aggressively, attacked with speed and punished poor defending for the second and third goals. City had 59% possession but little penetration, which is why Arsenal’s lower share of the ball did not matter.

Why City looked vulnerable

Maresca inherited a squad in transition, not a finished team. Bernardo Silva and John Stones left, Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and James Trafford were sold, and Rodri is now expected to join Barcelona in a £65m deal. That is an enormous loss of experience and control in one window.

Elliot Anderson made his first appearance after the World Cup and showed effort, but he cannot be expected to reproduce Rodri’s authority immediately. City were also introducing Erling Haaland and Anderson after limited preparation, so Maresca’s starting XI was not close to its final form.

The defensive issues were more concerning than the result itself. Arsenal’s first goal came after 23 seconds, Havertz was allowed too much room for the second, and Odegaard ran through unchecked for the third. Those are organisational problems Maresca has to fix quickly.

The Rodri problem

Rodri’s likely departure compounds City’s problems. He has been City’s most important midfield controller and is difficult to replace directly, even after recent injury disruption. Lille’s 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi is the leading long-term target, while Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and other midfielders remain under consideration.

Anderson and a potential signing such as Bouaddi could eventually form an effective partnership: Anderson offers mobility and box-to-box energy, while Bouaddi is more of a deep distributor. But that would be a new midfield, rather than an instant continuation of what City had under Guardiola.

Are Arsenal title favourites?

Yes. Arsenal’s stability makes them the logical favourites: Arteta is the only manager among the traditional “big six” to begin this season having been in charge at the start of last term, and Opta gives the champions a 38% chance of retaining the title.

Liverpool remain a serious threat under Andoni Iraola, while City retain too much talent to dismiss after one defeat. But Arsenal are six years into Arteta’s project, have added depth without losing key first-team figures, and look much more settled than their main rivals.

The Community Shield does not settle the title race. It does show that Arsenal begin the campaign with a clearer identity, stronger continuity and fewer unresolved questions than Manchester City.
