Manchester United agree £70m deal for Carlos Baleba

Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to £70m to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

The proposed transfer includes £65m paid up front, with a further £5m in add-ons, while Brighton have also secured a sell-on clause. Baleba is expected to sign a five-year contract and undergo a medical within the next 24 hours.

United have tracked the 22-year-old for almost a year. The club first explored a possible move during the January transfer window, but Brighton’s valuation was considerably higher at the time. The Seagulls were reportedly seeking a fee above the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023.

Despite a drop in Baleba’s form last season, United remain convinced by his long-term potential and see the reduced fee as a worthwhile opportunity.

Third midfield signing

Baleba will become Manchester United’s third midfield addition of the summer, following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

While Santos and Tielemans offer technical quality and control, Baleba is expected to provide a more defensive and athletic profile. His ability to recover possession, cover large areas of the pitch and carry the ball through midfield makes him a different option for United’s midfield rebuild.

The Cameroon international’s arrival would give United greater balance in central areas, particularly in matches where they need more physicality and defensive protection.

Injury delays debut

Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained during pre-season.

He is not expected to be fit until around the middle of September, putting his potential debut date in doubt. United face Manchester City on 13 September and Fulham on 20 September, before a three-week international break that could give him time to settle into the squad and regain full fitness.

Risk and potential

A year ago, Baleba was regarded as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young midfielders after an impressive breakthrough campaign at Brighton. His performances attracted interest from several leading European clubs, with United among those who viewed him as a possible long-term answer in midfield.

However, his form declined significantly last season. His output dropped and he struggled at times to reproduce the authority and consistency that made him such a sought-after player.

That makes the deal a calculated risk for United. They are paying for Baleba’s potential rather than his recent form alone.

At his best, Baleba offers the athleticism, aggression and ball-winning ability that United have lacked in midfield. He can break up attacks, drive forward with possession and bring greater intensity to the side’s pressing game.

Still only 22, Baleba has plenty of room to improve. He has previously named Paul Pogba, Yaya Toure and Andres Iniesta among his midfield influences, pointing to an ambition to combine physical dominance with creativity and flair.

United will hope their £70m investment helps him rediscover his best form and develop into one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders.
