Savio makes instant impact as Tottenham beat Charlton 5-1

Savio made a spectacular Tottenham debut as Roberto De Zerbi’s side swept past Charlton 5-1 in the Carabao Cup.

The Brazilian joined Spurs from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £85m on Tuesday, but needed only 20 minutes to score and provide an assist. His arrival immediately lifted the atmosphere inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and offered supporters a glimpse of the attacking spark the team has been missing.

Redknapp praises winger

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp was impressed by Savio’s direct style and confidence.

“He lit the place up,” Redknapp said. “This is what Tottenham want—players who can get you off your seat, cut inside and hit a ferocious left-footed shot.”

Savio’s cameo came after Tottenham had already established control of the match, but his pace, close control and willingness to attack defenders gave Charlton a new problem to solve.

His goal and assist were particularly encouraging after a difficult Premier League campaign in front of goal. Savio scored only once in the league last season, while Tottenham managed just 48 goals overall.

De Zerbi demands more goals

Although De Zerbi was pleased with Savio’s debut, the Tottenham manager immediately challenged him to become more productive.

“It is a perfect day for him,” De Zerbi said. “As qualities, I think he is one of the best wingers, but the best wingers score many goals.”

De Zerbi has set Savio a target of 10 to 12 goals for the season, believing that contribution is essential if Tottenham are to move higher up the table.

“We need 10 or 12 goals from the wingers,” he added. “Last season we suffered too much because the number of goals was not enough.”

A promising start

Savio’s arrival had initially raised questions because of his limited output at City and the size of the transfer fee. However, his debut could hardly have been more positive.

He was energetic from his first touch, attacked space aggressively and gave Tottenham the kind of unpredictability their forward line has lacked. Supporters responded enthusiastically, sensing that the 22-year-old could become a central figure in De Zerbi’s plans.

The opposition will be stronger when Tottenham return to Premier League action, but the early signs are encouraging. Savio arrived less than 48 hours before the match and still managed to influence the result decisively.

For De Zerbi, the challenge is now to turn a memorable cameo into consistent end product. If Savio can combine his flair with the scoring numbers his manager demands, Tottenham may have found the attacking catalyst they need.
