Welbeck scores on debut as Chelsea beat Luton 2-0

Danny Welbeck marked his Chelsea debut with a goal as Xabi Alonso’s side defeated League One Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the Carabao Cup third round.

The result gave Alonso his first competitive home victory as Chelsea manager and extended the club’s perfect start under the Spaniard to two wins from two. Chelsea will host Leeds United in the next round.

Chelsea dominate but wait for breakthrough

Alonso named a strong starting line-up, including Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and captain Reece James, as Chelsea looked to avoid an upset.

The hosts controlled the first half and created several chances. Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley twice denied Palmer early on, then saved James’ free-kick. Estevao also threatened, while Rogers struck the crossbar just before the interval.

Luton defended resolutely and stayed compact, limiting Chelsea despite the difference in league status. The visitors’ best chance came when Hakeem Odoffin headed a free-kick towards goal, but Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders made the save.

Welbeck breaks the deadlock

Chelsea finally found a way through five minutes after half-time.

Estevao combined with Malo Gusto on the right before the full-back delivered an excellent cross towards the far post. Welbeck arrived at the right moment and powered a header beyond Keeley to score his first goal for the club.

The strike was a reminder that Chelsea’s summer additions will not all need to be marquee signings to make an impact. Welbeck’s experience and movement gave the hosts a focal point in attack, particularly against Luton’s deep defensive block.

Estevao seals the victory

Chelsea continued to press for a second goal and were rewarded with 11 minutes remaining.

Estevao produced a sharp run and a clever stepover before driving a low effort towards the far corner. The shot was turned into his own net by Odoffin, officially recorded as an own goal.

The Brazilian had been a constant threat throughout the match, creating space and testing Luton’s defence with his direct running.

Chelsea could have added a third late on, but substitute João Pedro missed a clear chance and Jamie Gittens struck the post in stoppage time.

Alonso learns from low block

Alonso said Chelsea had to show patience against a Luton team that defended deeply and with determination.

“We needed to play with patience,” he said. “Luton were defending with heart and were solid, so we knew that if they defend that low, it’s not easy.”

The Chelsea manager also acknowledged that his side must become more comfortable against this type of opponent.

“It’s the first time we have played against a low block this season. We have to prepare for when teams play in that way.”

Chelsea created 26 shots, with Palmer and Estevao each making five chances, and Alonso’s switch to a 4-2-3-1 gave the team a different attacking option after using a 3-4-3 system in the victory over Fulham.

Wilshere proud despite defeat

The defeat ended Luton’s 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions, the longest such streak among teams in England’s top four divisions.

Manager Jack Wilshere praised his players’ concentration and effort but admitted they were disappointed to lose.

“Proud is the word that comes to mind,” Wilshere said. “We knew it would be difficult, but I’m proud of the players. We want to create that winning culture and feeling.”

Chelsea now turn their attention back to the Premier League, with Alonso’s side returning to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
