Bruno Fernandes proves decisive in United's 5-2 comeback

Manchester United’s first home game under Michael Carrick began in difficult conditions, with dark skies, heavy rain and water pouring through a leak in the Old Trafford roof.

It could easily have become a symbol of another miserable afternoon for the hosts. Instead, United produced a stirring comeback to beat Ipswich Town 5-2, with captain Bruno Fernandes once again at the centre of everything.

On a day when Marcus Rashford made his first Premier League start for United since December 2024 and Kobbie Mainoo returned to the starting line-up, it was Fernandes who dominated the headlines.

Fernandes turns the match around

United looked unsettled after Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead, but Fernandes levelled five minutes before half-time with a powerful finish after Matheus Cunha took advantage of a mistake from Marcelino Núñez.

Jacob Greaves’ own goal put United ahead early in the second half, before Fernandes converted a penalty to make it 3-1. The spot-kick carried extra significance after he had missed twice during pre-season, but the Portugal international showed no hesitation.

Seven minutes later, he completed his hat-trick from close range. Fernandes even came close to scoring an extraordinary fourth when he attempted a 55-yard effort after Ipswich surrendered possession, only for the ball to land on the roof of the net.

Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth, while Chuba Akpom scored a late consolation for Ipswich.

A decisive response

Fernandes had endured a disappointing performance in United’s shock 2-0 defeat by Hull City on the opening weekend. His response was emphatic, coming only days after he collected the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for his outstanding 2025-26 campaign.

Last season, Fernandes set a Premier League record with 21 assists and helped United finish third to secure a return to the Champions League. His latest display showed why the club remain so dependent on him.

“He means a lot,” Carrick said. “He’s the captain, he’s been here for a good number of years and has experienced a whole load of different emotions.”

Carrick added that Fernandes was the player United needed when the match demanded “something else”.

Contract uncertainty remains

Despite his continued importance, Fernandes’ future is not entirely settled. The 31-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, although United have the option to extend it by another season.

Interest from abroad, including from Galatasaray, is not expected to lead to a move before the transfer window closes. However, Fernandes could reasonably argue that he deserves to be United’s highest-paid player—a status currently held by Rashford.

Former United winger Ashley Young believes the club would face a major problem without their captain.

“He is the one that gets Manchester United ticking,” Young said. “There is a reason why he was voted player of the year by his fellow professionals. If they don’t have him, there is going to be a huge hole in this team.”

Carrick’s new era takes shape

The win offered encouraging signs for Carrick’s developing team. Rashford’s return to the starting line-up was significant, while Mainoo also featured as United began to find greater rhythm after a difficult opening period.

However, Fernandes remains the constant. After the final whistle, his first instinct was to discuss a late pass with substitute Benjamin Sesko before greeting the opposing players and officials.

He then realised he had forgotten to collect the match ball and returned to claim it from referee Craig Pawson.

“It was one of those days when everything comes to you and you have to take it,” Fernandes told BBC Sport. “I hate losing, and it is difficult to be positive when you lose games.”

United may be entering a new era under Carrick, but the message from Old Trafford remains clear: Fernandes is still the player who sets the standard.
