Atletico Madrid Triumphs 4-2 Over Real Valladolid with Alvarez's Penalty Brace
Posted on April 15, 2025
Atletico Madrid showcased their resilience by coming from behind to secure a 4-2 victory against Real Valladolid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium. The match was marked by Julian Alvarez's standout performance, as he scored two penalties, helping his team keep pace with second-placed Real Madrid in La Liga.
Real Valladolid shocked the hosts by taking the lead in the 21st minute when Mamadou Sylla converted a penalty after a handball by Clement Lenglet, following a VAR review. However, Atletico responded quickly, with Alvarez equalizing from the spot shortly after, thanks to a foul on Giuliano Simeone. The home side then took the lead with a goal from Simeone in the 27th minute.
Valladolid fought back and managed to level the game again with a deflected free-kick from Javi Sanchez that wrong-footed Jan Oblak in the 56th minute. Yet, Atletico's determination shone through as they regained control late in the match. Alvarez netted his second penalty after a foul on Marcos Llorente, and substitute Alexander Sorloth sealed the win with a close-range finish.
This victory is significant for Atletico, as they have now collected 23 points from losing positions this season, more than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues. Alvarez's achievement of scoring two penalties in a single match places him among Atletico legends, joining Diego Costa and Saul Niguez in that exclusive club.
As Atletico Madrid continues to chase La Liga leaders Barcelona, this win not only boosts their confidence but also reinforces their position as formidable contenders in the league. The match highlighted both their attacking prowess and their ability to respond under pressure, setting a positive tone as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
