Belgium Edges Past Wales in Thrilling 4-3 Encounter

Posted on June 10, 2025

In a dramatic World Cup qualifying match, Belgium defeated Wales 4-3, overcoming a remarkable comeback attempt by the visitors. The clash, held at the King Baudouin Stadium, saw Belgium race to a 3-0 lead within the first half hour, only to see Wales rally back and threaten to equalize.

Belgium opened the scoring with a penalty from Romelu Lukaku after a controversial handball decision against Brennan Johnson following a lengthy VAR check. Just two minutes later, Youri Tielemans doubled the lead with a well-placed shot, and Jeremy Doku added a third goal, leaving Wales in a tough position early in the match.

However, Wales began to find their footing just before halftime when Harry Wilson converted a penalty, awarded after a foul on Chris Mepham by Belgian goalkeeper Mats Sels. This goal provided Wales with a glimmer of hope heading into the second half.

The momentum shifted significantly after the break, with Sorba Thomas scoring from Wilson's assist seven minutes into the half, bringing the score to 3-2. Wales continued to press and managed to equalize through Brennan Johnson, who scored a header following a well-placed cross.

Despite being on the back foot, Belgium's attacking prowess proved decisive. After a disallowed goal due to a VAR check, Kevin De Bruyne emerged as the hero, scoring the match-winner in the 88th minute with a deft finish from a Tielemans cross.

The win handed Belgium the crucial three points, but it also marked Craig Bellamy's first defeat as Wales' manager, despite the team's spirited performance. Moving forward, Wales will look to build on their resilience shown in the match, while Belgium aims to solidify their position in the qualifying standings.
