Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham: Magpies Secure Victory to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-finals
Posted on October 30, 2025
Newcastle United continued their impressive form in the Carabao Cup with a solid 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park, ensuring their progression to the quarter-finals. This win marks Newcastle's resilience as they aim to defend their title, showing strength against a Spurs side that struggled to find their rhythm.
The match started brightly for Newcastle, with Fabian Schar opening the scoring in the 24th minute with a well-placed header from a corner, much to the dismay of the visiting team. Spurs felt aggrieved, believing that Djed Spence should have been given more time to return to his defensive position after he had to adjust his boot just before the set piece.
As the first half progressed, Newcastle created several chances, with Harvey Barnes coming close to doubling the lead shortly before the break, hitting the crossbar. Tottenham attempted to respond, but their efforts were thwarted by a solid Newcastle defense and the excellent goalkeeping of Aaron Ramsdale.
In the second half, Newcastle struck again, with new signing Nick Woltemade heading home in the 50th minute after a mistake from Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. This goal effectively sealed the game for the Magpies, who continued to press for more but were unable to find the back of the net again.
Despite a spirited performance from Tottenham, they failed to convert their chances, with Richarlison in particular struggling to make an impact. The Brazilian was substituted in the 78th minute after another disappointing display, leaving him without a goal in his last eight appearances.
Newcastle's coach, Eddie Howe, praised the performance of his players, particularly Woltemade, who has quickly adapted to the team since his arrival. Howe emphasized the importance of maintaining their cup run and the positive momentum heading into the next league fixtures.
As for Tottenham, manager Thomas Frank expressed frustration over the defensive mistakes that led to both goals, indicating that the team needs to regroup as they prepare for their upcoming London derby against Chelsea. The defeat highlighted ongoing issues for Spurs, who will need to address their form to compete effectively in the league.
With this victory, Newcastle will now look forward to their quarter-final clash against Fulham, while Tottenham must bounce back quickly to regain their confidence in the league.
