Enzo Maresca Criticizes Red Cards After Chelsea's Narrow Victory Over Wolves
Posted on October 30, 2025
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his discontent following a chaotic 4-3 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup, where his side's indiscipline was again highlighted by the dismissal of Liam Delap. The young striker, who had just returned from injury, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession, raising concerns over Chelsea's growing list of red cards this season.
Delap, who came on as a substitute, was shown a yellow card for a foul on Yerson Mosquera and then received a second caution shortly after for a challenge on Emmanuel Agbadou. Maresca did not shy away from criticizing the player's actions, labeling the red card as "very stupid" and "completely unnecessary." He stressed the need for better discipline within the squad, especially as they prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures.
Despite Chelsea's initial dominance, where they took a 3-0 lead, they allowed Wolves back into the match, conceding three goals and creating a nail-biting finish. The dramatic encounter saw Jamie Gittens score for Wolves, but Chelsea managed to hold on for victory and progress to the next round of the cup.
Maresca's frustrations extend beyond just Delap's dismissal. He pointed out that the team has now received six red cards in their past nine matches, highlighting a worrying trend of indiscipline. He acknowledged that while some red cards may be justified, the ones against Nottingham Forest and Wolves could have been easily avoided.
The manager's comments reflect a pressing need for the club to address these issues as they navigate a challenging season ahead. With a series of important matches on the horizon, including games against tough opponents, Chelsea's ability to maintain composure will be crucial.
As Chelsea looks to build momentum, the focus will be on correcting these disciplinary lapses and ensuring that their key players remain on the pitch to contribute to the team's success.
