Lamine Yamal Released from Spain Squad Following Groin Procedure

Posted on November 12, 2025

Lamine Yamal has been released from the Spain national team ahead of their World Cup qualifiers after undergoing a groin procedure. The 18-year-old Barcelona winger had been called up for matches against Georgia and Turkey but will now miss out due to a medical intervention that the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) was not previously informed about.

The injury was disclosed on the day training commenced for the team, and it left manager Luis de la Fuente expressing his surprise at not being notified about Yamal's condition. The RFEF confirmed that the young player underwent an invasive radiofrequency procedure to address discomfort in his pubic area, which was conducted without prior communication to their medical staff. As a result, they deemed it necessary to release Yamal to prioritize his health and recovery.

Yamal had scored in a recent La Liga match against Celta Vigo before the injury. His absence will be felt as Spain seeks to solidify its position in Group E, where they currently lead. In Yamal's place, Rayo Vallecano's Jorge de Frutos has been called up to the squad.

This incident adds to the ongoing tension between Barcelona and the RFEF, especially following past disputes regarding player management during international breaks. As Yamal focuses on his recovery, both clubs and the national team will hope to find a solution that prioritizes player welfare in the future.
