Poland 1-1 Netherlands: Depay Keeps Dutch World Cup Hopes Alive

Posted on November 15, 2025

The Netherlands moved closer to securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup after a gritty 1-1 draw against Poland in Warsaw. Although they didn't clinch qualification, Memphis Depay’s equalizing goal ensured they remain three points clear at the top of Group G.

Poland took an early lead when Jakub Kaminski capitalized on a well-executed give-and-go with Robert Lewandowski, finishing through the legs of Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen just before halftime. However, the Netherlands responded quickly in the second half, with Depay scoring after Kamil Grabara denied Donyell Malen's header, showcasing his clinical finishing ability.

Despite several opportunities for both teams, including a near miss from Lewandowski following a cross from Matty Cash, neither side could find the winner in the latter stages. Poland's frustration was evident, especially as they recorded an expected goals (xG) of 1.56 from 12 shots compared to the Netherlands’ 0.74 from eight attempts.

With this draw, Poland faces an uphill battle to qualify, as they would need an improbable swing in goal difference in their final group match. In contrast, Depay’s eighth goal of the campaign places him among the top scorers, with only Erling Haaland ahead in the race for goals during qualifiers.

As the Dutch aim for a World Cup berth, their performance against Poland provides a foundation to build on, while Poland must regroup to make their own bid for qualification.
