PSG and Bayern Serve Up a Champions League Classic
Posted on April 29, 2026, updated on April 29, 2026
Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-4 first-leg win over Bayern Munich was the kind of match that reminds people why football still captivates so many fans. It was fast, chaotic and full of quality, with both teams attacking relentlessly and refusing to sit back.
The result was historic as well as entertaining. It became the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final first leg in more than 60 years, and the first time in any major European semi-final that both teams scored at least four goals. For all the tactical talk that usually dominates modern football, this was a night that showed the power of simply trying to outscore the opponent.
PSG raced to a three-goal advantage at one stage, but Bayern refused to disappear. Their late comeback reduced the margin to one goal, leaving the tie alive ahead of the return leg in Munich. Even so, the match felt like a statement from both sides: this was not cautious knockout football, but a full-throttle contest between two of Europe’s most dangerous attacks.
Luis Enrique called it the best match he has managed in his career, praising the rhythm, the attacking intent and the entertainment value. That view was widely shared. Fans and pundits alike were struck by how open the game was, especially at a time when many matches are defined by set-pieces, low blocks and careful risk management.
The goals reflected the quality on display. Harry Kane scored for Bayern, while PSG responded through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Joao Neves and Ousmane Dembele. Michael Olise and Luis Diaz also stood out for Bayern, while PSG’s pace and precision in the final third repeatedly caused problems.
Defensively, though, both teams were exposed. Bayern’s aggressive style left gaps at the back, and PSG punished them. At the same time, Bayern’s late fightback showed that the tie is far from over, even after a wild night in Paris.
The game also raises an interesting contrast with the other semi-final. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are far more defensive in style, and they are unlikely to produce anything like this kind of open contest. That may help them in a different way, but it also means they will be judged by a different standard.
For one unforgettable evening, though, PSG and Bayern offered a reminder that football can still be thrilling when both teams play to win.
