Henderson could still play despite broken arm

Jordan Henderson has not been ruled out of the rest of England’s World Cup campaign despite undergoing surgery on a broken arm. The Brentford midfielder may still be considered for matchday squads, and England are even exploring whether he could play in a cast.

Henderson was hurt after the win over Mexico when he fell awkwardly while jumping over the advertising hoardings during celebrations. He was carried off on a stretcher and given oxygen, but he will remain with the squad in Kansas City for the rest of the tournament.

His presence still matters to the group. Morgan Rogers described him as the “heartbeat” of the squad and said Henderson’s positivity has lifted the team even after the injury. England hope he can stay involved in some capacity before the tournament ends.

There is also better news on Marc Guehi, whose absence from training was only precautionary. He is expected to be fit for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway, with muscular fatigue thought to be the reason he sat out the session.

Declan Rice also missed training because of a hamstring and lower-back problem that has affected him throughout the tournament, but he too is expected to be available. Reece James remains another possible option after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The main lesson for England is simple: no more jumping over hoardings after games. Thomas Tuchel is expected to tell his players to avoid a repeat, so the squad can keep its key men available for the business end of the World Cup.
